⚡ The Case For Unhinged Newsletters

[Read the browser version right here]

Hey Reader!

Here's what's happening in this edition:

→ The Case For Unhinged Newsletters
→ Can she get 3,000 subscribers in 90 days?
→ Free landing page roast
→ A free guide to turn subscribers into customers
→ Pics from my trip to Spain
→ and more!

Quickly before we get into it:

I haven't sent an issue since August 6th. This was never my intention. (Thanks Adriana for the nudge to send yesterday)

But lot's happened in those 2.5 months. In that time, I've...

→ started & completed Chenell's Stop Losing Subscribers 4-week challenge (aka the 'SLS Challenge')

→ traveled to Spain to compete for Team Canada (pics at the end)

→ ran (literally) around Lisbon on a sightseeing tour

→ helped plan a new growth challenge

→ revisited different ways this newsletter can provide Insanely Valuable Content to you, Reader. I hope this edition fits that billing.

Like I said, a lot has happened. The end of summer offered a ton of highlights.

Next issue, I'm going to share a lot more about the SLS Challenge and what came of it.

But for now, let's get into unhinged newsletters.

Resource Of The Week ⚡

(Not a sponsored post, just supporting a friend and past client)

Writing better YouTube videos doesn’t need to take all day.

You don't need fight the blank page and waste hours writing and rewriting, wondering if your video is going to "work".

There’s a better solution (and it's not AI).

My friend KJ runs KJ Grey Writing: a YT channel for learning how to write better video scripts faster.

KJ's scripts have gotten anywhere from 24,000 to 540,000 views. Not too shabby!

Check out KJ's channel for fast, free, expert scriptwriting tips.

THE MOST UNHINGED NEWSLETTER
I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF

Or: Why It Matters To Stand Out In The Inbox

I'm a marketer and a newsletter nerd.

So I subscribe to a lot of newsletters. Many of them are "B2B".

Actually let's rephrase that.

Many of them are BB2B — cuz they are BORING af.

Sorry, not sorry.

Lucky if I read 2 sentences and don't dip ✌️

The worst part: I don't even care if the content is helpful or hyper-relevant. If it doesn't engage my ADHD brain, you've lost me.

So when I came across Jay Schewedelson's newsletter, it felt like a B2B marketing newsletter made just for me.

It's called Jay's Scoop—but don't let the fact Jay put all of 1.4 seconds into the thought of the newsletter name fool you.

What the newsletter lacks in a name, it makes up for in unhinged cringe, entertainment, and substance.

Why It Stands Out

#1: THE DESIGN

Jay’s newsletter is a graphic designer’s nightmare. It’s bad. But maybe in the best way?

There are wild fonts, no cohesive design structures, and an "any-color-we-feel-like-using" strategy.

Believe it or not, the wild & colorful design is just a taste of what you'll find in Jay's Scoop.

And despite the IDGAF design, I still can’t get enough of it.

The more important fact (that might surprise you) is that behind the jarring-but-stimulating visuals...

...there really, truly, is substance.

I'm opening for the whackiness. But I'm staying for the substance.

But like I said at the onset: the substance doesn't matter if I'm not hooked at the onset. Hat tip to the wild west design and random all caps 🫡

#2: THE CONTENT

(AKA - the part where even the sexiest, most beautifully designed newsletters can fail.)

Chenell Basilio harps on Insanely Valuable Content™. Jay’s Scoop delivers just that.

For a refresher, Chenell has written over 70 deep dives on successful newsletter creators. She's found 6 buckets that make a newsletter "insanely valuable". And it's content that:

  1. Makes you money
  2. Saves you money
  3. Saves you time
  4. Makes you feel (humor, anger, empathy, etc)
  5. Teaches you something
  6. Gets you first to market

A good newsletter will hit on one of these buckets.
But a
great newsletter will hit on multiple.

Jay's Scoop hits on, arguably, three of these: #3, #4, and #5.

Combine that with how it stands out visually, Jay's Scoop is a great newsletter. (Disagree? Please reply telling me why)

HOW IT SAVES ME TIME (Bucket #3)

Jay often includes AI prompts his team has tested to improve my marketing and content efforts.

HOW IT MAKES ME FEEL (Bucket #4)

Is the newsletter funny?

Well I wouldn't classify it as a knee-slapper.

But it's 1000% irreverent. And I find the irreverence refreshing.

I'll take its yeeting-caution-to-the-wind vibes over dry, serious content 9 emails out of 10. It makes me feel... good? Like learning about email marketing is fun.

Plus, how can you not appreciate the passion one middle-aged man has for reality trash TV and random things like hating on Netflix's Top 10 Movies list:

HOW IT TEACHES ME SOMETHING (Bucket #5)

I’m not gonna include everything I've learned from Jay's Scoop. But damn if there's not a gem in every edition.

Quick example -- last week Jay informed and educated me on unsubscribes being highest during Q4, and encouraged me (yes me) to not worry and keep sending.

And he's been sending cool learnings since his first few editions back in early 2026. His 'Easy Marketing Tip to Try' is always simple and legit backed by data 👇

FINAL THOUGHT

I don't know if leaning into irreverence and silliness was always part of Jay's plan. My bet is yes. Yes it was.

But should it be part of EVERY newsletter?

Probably not. Time and place, and all that.

Jay was likely as sick of BB2B newsletters as me and did NOT want to publish another one.

My inbox faces a monsoon of BB2B & BB2C newsletters daily.

And if you feel called out, I'm sorry. But do better k?

Boring is a bad strategy.

Engaging your readers is the goal, right? Getting them to open, read, engage, share, and then do it again the next time? Right.

I'm not saying to be as unhinged as Jay's Scoop.

But maybe loosen those hinges up just a bit.

⚡ She's trying to get 3,000 *organic* subs in 90 days (and built a custom tracker for it) but can she do it?

Not sure if I'm more impressed by this epic custom tracker dashboard or the fact that "growthinpublic.com" was still available. Either way, Chenell's at 70+ new organic subs. Will she hit 3k??

Research shows there are types of thinkers. But your subject line should 100% be written for one kind, and not not the other. Katelyn lays out which type, why, and gives some solid subject line examples.
