⚡ The Case for Pruning Your Email List

My ego took a beating last month.

I removed 700 "dead" email addresses from my list 💀 Anyone who hadn't engaged in 90+ days was gone—after running a re-engagement campaign, obvi.

(congrats on surviving! haha)

Losing ~15% of your email list in one day hurts the ego.

But what doesn't hurt is the result—and that 100% validated the decision.

The email stats prior to removing 700 emails looked like this.

BEFORE:

→ 4,618 recipients
→ 1,967 unique opens
→ 42.59% open rate
→ 209 recipients clicked at least one link

AFTER:

→ 3,337* recipients 📉
→ 1,980 unique opens 📈
→ 59.33% open rate 📈
→ 130 recipients clicked at least one link 📉

*I also did not send to "Do not Disturb" subscribers or newly "cold" subscribers: those who have not engaged over the past 30 days.

In sum: Fewer recipients, more opens, fewer clicks.

So despite unsubscribing 15% of my email list... more people in total read my newsletter—even with ~1300 fewer recipients.

Now regarding the lower click rate....

A lower % of openers actualy clicked. But what appeared to be bot clicks in previous emails are now (mostly) gone. That's purely an anecdotal observation but we'll see if the trend continues.

So between this annual list prune and running my newsletter through the handy tool below, my newsletter is getting into more and more inboxes — and fewer promotions tabs and spam folders.

That's a win in my books.
