That Earns $76/subscriber

Matt McGarry has grown his newsletter to over 50k subscribers in 3 years.

And yes — he's used some paid growth. That's what his agency does best.

But most of his growth has been organic.

Matt's leveraged a variety of organic growth strategies over the past 3 years. Twitter threads with "reply-to-get" CTAs got him his first ~1000 subscribers before Twitter became a dumpster fire.

So Matt pivoted to other channels. And now he's laser-focused on LinkedIn & YouTube.

Why?

Matt told us he makes $76 per newsletter subscriber he gets from LinkedIn. Solid rationale.

Here are the two main strategies Matt's used for LinkedIn & YouTube.

LINKEDIN: THE 'COMMENT-TO-GET' STRATEGY

There's one LinkedIn strategy Matt keeps going back to: "Comment-to-get" posts.

You've probably seen posts like the one pictured below with a CTA "Comment X and I'll send you the Y."

Yes. You might be sick of these. But they still work when done right.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Create a new, valuable lead magnet (or use an existing one)
  2. Publish a post that offers a solution (the lead magnet) to a common problem
  3. Include the "comment-to-get" CTA like Matt did
  4. DM the link to your lead magnet landing page to anyone who comments

WHY THIS WORKS

  1. Minimal friction. Posting a simple comment is a low lift for a desired solution.
  2. Gated content. Gating the highly-aligned & free resource with a sign-up form (ie. email address) gets you ideal subscribers.
  3. BONUS: experts claim people in your DMs are more likely to see your future LinkedIn posts — I can't verify this, but it's surely a strong engagement signal for LinkedIn.

Matt attributes much of his newsletter growth via LinkedIn to this specific strategy.

YOUTUBE: THE LAZY LEAD MAGNET STRATEGY

This one is kinda crazy—but so simple.

Matt shared on our recent podcast episode that one of his newer videos drove "hundreds of new subscribers."

Chenell investigated deeper after we recorded.

Matt told her the video has now driven over 1,000 subscribers.

HOW TO DO IT

On the surface, it's pretty straightforward. Matt...

1) teases a relevant lead magnet in the video, then

2) shares the link in the description of the video, and

3) includes another CTA + link in a pinned comment below the video

But diving deeper, there's more to.

But what about the "Lazy" Lead Magnet?

I almost forgot!

"What I try to do with each newsletter edition is write something so valuable, concise, and insightful that it could become a lead magnet.

Every time I promote a 'lead magnet' -- it's just one of my newsletters behind an email gate where people have to enter their email to read the content.

So it creates no additional work for me. I just have to write the post and then promote it."
